The story
He stayed to become champion.
Memphis started out aged six at VV Moordrecht, the club in his home town. Via the Sparta Rotterdam academy he arrived at PSV at around twelve. In Eindhoven he grew into one of the greatest talents of his generation.
On 21 September 2011 he made his official debut, aged seventeen, in the cup tie away at VVSB (0–8). He scored straight away. Six months later PSV beat Heracles 3–0 in the cup final at De Kuip: his first trophy as a professional. In August 2012 came the Johan Cruyff Shield, after a 4–2 win over Ajax.
Under Phillip Cocu he made his definitive breakthrough as a left winger. In the 2014–15 season he wore the number 7 and was unstoppable: 28 goals in all competitions, 22 of them in the Eredivisie. That made him the league’s top scorer.
On 18 April 2015 PSV became champions with a 4–1 win over Heerenveen, their first league title since 2008. Memphis made it 2–0 with a superb free kick. That same year he won the Johan Cruyff Award for the greatest talent in the Netherlands. As the winner he could choose a location for a Cruyff Court, and he chose Moordrecht, where it all began.
