The story
A dream in red.
On 12 June 2015 the transfer became official: Memphis signed a four-year deal with Manchester United. Louis van Gaal, his national team coach at the 2014 World Cup, said of him: ‘I have no doubt that he has the potential to become a great footballer for this club.’ Memphis was given the famous number 7. ‘It’s an honour to wear the number seven and I will wear it with pride,’ he said.
On 8 August 2015 he made his Premier League debut, at Old Trafford against Tottenham Hotspur (1–0). Ten days later came his big European night. In the Champions League play-off against Club Brugge he scored twice, the second with a beautiful curler, and in stoppage time he set up Marouane Fellaini for the 3–1. ‘It’s a great feeling to score twice at Old Trafford,’ he said afterwards.
On 26 September he scored his first Premier League goal, just before half-time against Sunderland (3–0). That win took United to the top of the Premier League. In February 2016 he made it 5–1 against FC Midtjylland, on the night Marcus Rashford made his debut.
In January 2017 a new chapter began in France. Memphis said goodbye with warm words: ‘Thank you for all the memories as a Red Devil. I will never forget your support.’
