The story
Four and a half golden years.
On 20 January 2017 Memphis signed for Olympique Lyonnais. Just two days later he made his debut, coming off the bench in a 3–1 win over Olympique de Marseille. Within two months he scored a goal all of France talked about: against Toulouse he lobbed the keeper from the centre circle. That season he won the Ligue 1 Goal of the Year award.
On the final matchday of 2017–18 he made history again. Against Nice he scored a second-half hat-trick, Lyon won 3–2 and finished third to qualify directly for the Champions League. In November 2019 coach Rudi Garcia made him captain.
In August 2020 he led Lyon to a European fairy tale. In Turin he opened the scoring against Juventus with a Panenka penalty, Lyon went through, and in Lisbon Manchester City were beaten too. That took Lyon to the Champions League semi-finals.
His last season was his best. Wearing the number 10, he scored 22 goals in all competitions, provided the most assists in Ligue 1 and was named in the Team of the Season. In his farewell he wrote: ‘Thank you for these four and a half incredible years.’
