The story
Barça’s number 9.
On 22 July 2021 Memphis was presented at Camp Nou. ‘It’s an honour and a dream to be here,’ he said. ‘As a child my grandfather gave me a Barcelona shirt, because he believed I would play here one day.’ The club gave him the famous number 9.
On 15 August he made his debut at Camp Nou against Real Sociedad (4–2). A week later, at San Mamés, he scored his first official goal, the equaliser against Athletic Club. Another week later he decided the match against Getafe with the 2–1 winner.
Under Xavi he remained important. At Villarreal he scored the decisive 1–2 in the 88th minute, and by the end of the season he was Barcelona’s top scorer in La Liga with 12 goals, ahead of Aubameyang and Luuk de Jong.
In the 2022–23 season Barcelona became champions of Spain and won the Supercopa: two trophies on his honours list. In January 2023 a new chapter began in Madrid.
