The story
From Elinkwijk to the Philips Stadion.
Zakaria Labyad was born on 9 March 1993 in Utrecht, where he grew up and learned to play football at USV Elinkwijk. His technique stood out, and in 2004 PSV brought him to their academy in Eindhoven.
On 25 February 2010 the moment arrived. In the Europa League against Hamburger SV, coach Fred Rutten brought him on in the 71st minute. He was sixteen years old and wore number 52. PSV won 3–2. In Hamburg’s starting line-up was another Dutchman: Eljero Elia.
A year later came a night never to forget. In the Europa League quarter-final away at Benfica, in Lisbon, he came on as a substitute in the 79th minute. A minute later the ball was in the net. He was eighteen.
In the 2011/12 season he made his definitive breakthrough and became a regular. On 8 April 2012 he started the cup final at De Kuip. PSV beat Heracles 3–0 and Labyad provided an assist. In the closing stages another academy graduate came on: Memphis Depay.
