The story
Number 17.
Juventus signed Elia on the last day of the transfer window, 31 August 2011. He came from Hamburger SV, signed for four years and was given the number 17 shirt. That day he said he knew a lot about Juventus. Antonio Conte started that season in a 4-2-4, with two out-and-out wingers.
On 8 September 2011 the new Juventus Stadium opened. Elia made his debut on 25 September at Catania (1–1), starting in a front three with Krasić and Matri, and came off at half-time. After that the system changed: Conte moved to 4-3-3 and later to 3-5-2, and Pepe, Krasić, Estigarribia and Giaccherini were all competing for the wide places.
He played four league games, all of them away: Catania, Roma, Genoa and Novara. Three times he came off the bench. His only competitive game in the new stadium was a Coppa Italia tie against Bologna in December, won 2–1 after extra time. He never scored a competitive goal for the club.
Still, he was part of a remarkable season. Juventus went through the league unbeaten: 23 wins, 15 draws, 84 points. No side had ever done that in a 38-game Serie A. In May 2012 Elia said he wanted to leave, and his lack of games also cost him a place at Euro 2012. On 10 July Juventus confirmed his move to Werder Bremen.
