Two seasons, two trophies.
In August 2015 Elia signed for Feyenoord. His first season brought the KNVB Cup. In the second he opened the league campaign with a hat-trick in Groningen (0–5), and it ended with the league title.

The story
He knocked on the door himself.
In the summer of 2015 his loan at Southampton was over. In Dubai, Elia happened to run into Colin Kazim-Richards, who told him to go to Feyenoord. So he put himself forward. On 6 August he signed a two-year deal, arriving on a free transfer from Werder Bremen. He was given the number 11, and a coach who was just as new as he was: Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
His first goal came off the bench. On 13 September he had been on the pitch for five minutes when he scored the only goal against Willem II. That winter things went wrong: nine league games without a win, seven of them straight defeats. Elia played in all nine. In April came the cup final against FC Utrecht at De Kuip. At 1–1, in the 75th minute, he cut in from the left and shot. The ball went in off the post and the back of goalkeeper Bednarek. Feyenoord won 2–1, their first trophy since 2008. “I’ve only come to love Feyenoord more,” he said afterwards.
The next league season began in Groningen. On 7 August 2016 he scored three times in twenty minutes, in the 36th, 45th and 56th minutes, in a 5–0 away win. An injury then kept him out for a while. In April he curled in the second goal against FC Utrecht, right in the middle of the title race.
On 14 May 2017 it was decided at home to Heracles. Dirk Kuyt scored all three goals. The second, a header, came from an Elia cross. He was substituted after 76 minutes. It was his last game for Feyenoord, and the club’s first league title in eighteen years. A month later he signed for İstanbul Başakşehir.
