The chapter
The Goal of the Month.
Elia joined HSV in the summer of 2009. On 12 December 2009 he scored the opener in Nuremberg shortly after half-time, and the match ended in a 0–4 away win. The goal was voted ARD-Sportschau's Goal of the Month for December 2009.

The story
Just over two years in Hamburg.
In early July 2009 Elia swapped FC Twente for Hamburger SV. He was 22, signed a five-year contract and was handed the number 11 shirt. Bruno Labbadia had only just arrived as coach too. Elia made his debut off the bench at Freiburg (1–1). Two weeks later he was already on the scoresheet, after seven minutes away at Wolfsburg, the reigning champions. HSV won 4–2.
His best-known goal for HSV came on 12 December 2009 in Nuremberg. Two minutes after half-time he chipped the ball in to put HSV ahead. Later he added the fourth himself. Viewers of ARD’s Sportschau voted the chip their Tor des Monats, the goal of the month, for December. No HSV player won that award again until March 2023.
At the end of November he had hurt his ankle at Mainz, but he played on. In March 2010 it turned out to be broken. He should have rested, he said, but he wanted to help the team. Surgery ruled him out of the Europa League quarter-final and semi-final. HSV went out against Fulham, and the final was played without them, in their own stadium. That summer Elia did play in a final: the World Cup final in Johannesburg, where he came on for Dirk Kuyt in the 71st minute.
In just over two years he played under four coaches: Labbadia, Ricardo Moniz, Armin Veh and Michael Oenning. HSV finished seventh, then eighth. Elia made 52 Bundesliga appearances for the club and scored seven goals. On 31 August 2011 he signed for Juventus.
