The story
Playing again, in green and white.
After a year at Juventus, Elia wanted to play again. On 10 July 2012 he signed a four-year contract with Werder Bremen. The coach was Thomas Schaaf, in charge since 1999. Elia already knew the Bundesliga from his time at HSV, and in Bremen he wore the number 11 again.
His first competitive game was a cup tie at third-tier Preußen Münster. Elia scored just before half-time, but Werder lost 4–2 after extra time. The rest of the season was hard. Werder finished 14th, three points clear of the relegation play-off place, and Schaaf left after fourteen years. Elia played 24 league games without scoring.
The second season, under Robin Dutt, went better. On 29 September 2013 he scored twice in a 3–3 draw with Nürnberg, his first league goals in almost three years. Two more followed in November, at home to Mainz and in a 4–4 at Hoffenheim. He played in 33 of the 34 league games.
The third began badly. In October 2014 Werder were bottom and Dutt was sacked; Viktor Skripnik took over. Elia played his last game in green and white on 23 November, in Hamburg of all places: he came on in the 88th minute of the derby against his old club. Werder lost 2–0. In January he went on loan to Southampton, and in August 2015 Werder let him join Feyenoord a year before his contract ran out.
